Grocery Retail Trend
£105 million was added to the value of the retail chicken
market last year, taking it to £1.75 billion. This represented growth
of 6.3%.
Retail sales rose both in volume and value terms. The drive towards
convenience helped the value-added sector grow by 14%.
Fresh whole chicken finally halted the decline in sales and remained
static in 1999. Frozen continued to decline, down nearly 18% in
value and 26% in volume.
The trend towards further processed products saw growth of 14% adding
over £89 million to the value of the sector.
The majority of chicken was sold through the top six supermarkets,
comprising 77% of all retail chicken sales. Once again, butchers'
shops suffered a drop in sales, with only 4% (reduced from 4.8% in
1998) now being sold through this channel. |
