British consumers ate 3.7% more chicken in 1999 than in 1998*.

Imports have continued to grow, up 17% in 1999, due in the main
to cheaper prices caused by the strength of sterling and the regulatory
costs imposed on the British industry.
|
|
|
The trend towards a cash-rich, time-poor culture has meant less
time for in-home cooking and more time and money available for both
restaurant and takeaway food. This is borne out by the continued growth
of fast-food outlets and chicken's position as a versatile, healthy
and value-for-money ingredient in the restaurant trade. Takeaway Sandwiches,
where chicken is the most popular flavour, also continue to have a
significant impact on the market.

The total retail market was worth £1.75 billion in 1999, an increase
of 6.3% over 1998. Value increased mainly due to significant growth
in the further processed market while volume growth rose by 2.3%.

|
There was an increase in the average retail price paid by consumers
for primary chicken to £2.99 per kilo, a rise of 12p on 1998, although
much of this increase reflected the growth in the portions market.
|
|
|
In terms of total meat spend, chicken held nearly 32% share of the
market. The other major meats together accounted for 36% of meat sales.
