Value-added Chicken Market

It was another excellent year for value-added chicken, with both sector value and volume up by 14% and 11% respectively. This sector now accounts for 41.4% (value) of the market.
Both the fresh and the frozen sectors of the value-added market expanded at similar rates. Chilled sales rose 11.4% to £316 million, and frozen sales rose 15% to £412 million.
All major sectors of the value-added market performed well. Fresh ready meals, however, were the highlight with value sales up 40.1% to £23 million and 38.7% in volume to 15,413 tonnes. Frozen ready meals also did well, showing double digit growth in both consumption and sales.
Also showing excellent year on year growth were meal centres (ie where chicken provides the main part of the meal, but to which something needs to be added to complete the meal), which grew £15 million in value to £105 million.
